Mesa softball team defeats Metro and falls to Mines

Jessica Severinsen pitched a gem, and the offense produced 11 hits to give the Colorado Mesa University softball team a split in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference doubleheader Friday in Golden.

The Mavericks (13-8-1, 11-4-1 RMAC) defeated Metro State 8-0 by the run rule in five innings after No. 13 Colorado Mines defeated Mesa 5-2 in the first game.

Severinsen limited Metro State to two hits and struck out seven in the second game. The junior pitcher got all the help she needed in the second inning when the Mavericks scored seven runs.

Nicole Robinson started the outburst with a run-scoring single. Taylor Gross followed with a two-run triple, and freshman Makayla Kovac had a RBI triple for a 4-0 lead. Severinsen drove in a run on a hit, and Megan Smith capped the inning with a two-run home run.

The Orediggers (22-3-1, 13-1 RMAC) took advantage of two Mesa errors in the first game. A first-inning error led to two runs for Mines. Orediggers’ left fielder Macy Jones hit a two-run home run in the second for a 4-0 lead.

Kovac answered with a two-run home run in the fourth — her team-leading seventh of the season. Mines added a run in the bottom half of the inning.

Mesa pitcher Courtney Shreves (4-5) allowed five runs (two earned) on six hits in four innings. She had two walks and struck out four.

Mines pitcher Kelly Unkrich (14-0) limited the Mavs to two runs on five hits and struck out seven.

Mines defeated Metro State 13-5 in between the Mesa games.
