Monsoon season seems to be arriving in Colorado

DURANGO — The monsoon season seems to be arriving in Colorado.

National Weather Service forecast models show late-afternoon showers developing in southwestern Colorado through at least Monday. Forecaster Tom Renwick told the Durango Herald the pattern could hold for the rest of the month.

Heavy rain fell Wednesday over the Little Sand fire burning near Pagosa Springs.

The monsoon is caused by a shift in wind patterns which funnels more moisture from the Pacific Ocean and Gulf of California to the Southwest. Monsoon season typically starts in the second week of July and continues through the end of August but can persist as late as October.
