Montrose County school district forms panels to pick superintendent
A cross-section of parents and Montrose County RE-1J School District staff make up the 43 applicants for two volunteer committees tasked with selecting the district’s next superintendent.
The deadline for committee applicants ended Wednesday. From the 43 people who applied, two committees of 16 to 20 members will be developed by the school board to interview finalists for the district’s top job.
The school board will announce the finalists during the March 8 board meeting and hand three names to the committees to begin interviews March 26.
Laurie Laird, administrative assistant for RE-1J, said 13 superintendent applicants are being reviewed by the Colorado Association of School Boards in Denver. The names of those applying are not available for public inspection. Only the finalists will be identified.
Laird said the new superintendent could be announced during the April board meeting.
Current Superintendent George Voorhis will step down June 30 after serving 10 years in that position.
RE-1J is made up of 14 schools in Montrose County.
