Moose, toddler run-in likely a freak accident

GRAND LAKE — Authorities say a run-in between a moose and a toddler in north-central Colorado appears to be a freak accident.

The moose trampled the child as he played on the beach of Shadow Mountain Reservoir near Grand Lake on Thursday. The boy was airlifted to a Denver area hospital but his condition isn’t known.

Division of Wildlife spokesman Randy Hampton said the moose kept running after hitting the boy.

At first, it wasn’t clear whether the moose had targeted the boy for some reason.

Capt. Nowell Curran of Grand County Emergency Services says it’s likely the moose didn’t see the boy and was just passing through the area. Moose have poor eyesight.
