UPDATED: Coroner ID’s Clifton man killed in I-70 crash

A 60-year-old man died around midnight at St. Mary’s Hospital, where he was airlifted after crashing his motorcycle on Interstate 70 in DeBeque Canyon, authorities said today.

Gene Callender of Clifton was riding his 1999 Harley Davidson west on I-70 when he struck a barrier at milepost 50, near the Beavertail Tunnel,  just before 6 p.m., the Mesa County Coroner’s Office and Colorado State Patrol said.

Callender suffered blunt-force injuries, the coroner said.

Trooper Josh Lewis said neither alcohol, drugs or excessive speed are believed to be factors. The rider wasn’t wearing a helmet, he said.

The accident was reported about 5:55 p.m. Wednesday, prompting closure of both westbound lanes of the interstate near DeBeque where traffic was re-routed through the DeBeque Cutoff.

No other vehicles were involved, Lewis said.
