Motorcyclist in critical condition after Silt-area accident

A motorcyclist was in critical but stable condition as of this morning at Denver Health Medical Center after being struck by a wayward trailer in an accident on Interstate 70 just east of Silt Monday afternoon.

The driver of the vehicle pulling the trailer has been cited for careless driving, the Colorado State Patrol said in a news release. Trooper Bonnie Collins said the accident happened due to hydroplaning.

It occurred about 3:34 p.m. amid heavy rain, when Weston Blackie, 29, of Arvada was pulling the trailer with a Dodge Ram in the right lane of eastbound I-70.

The State Patrol said the Ram and trailer spun out of control, crossing the median and westbound lanes before coming to rest off the roadway. The trailer became unhitched while crossing the westbound lanes and collided with a BMW motorcycle being driven by a 46-year-old man from Hampden, Maine. It overturned onto the motorcycle and the motorcyclist was ejected onto the north side of the westbound lanes, while the motorcycle and trailer slid east before coming to rest in the right westbound lane.

The motorcyclist was taken to Valley View Hospital in Glenwood Springs and later flown to Denver Health. He had been wearing a helmet.

The State Patrol was withholding his name pending notification of his family.

Neither Weston Blackie nor a passenger in the Ram, Natalia Blackie, 36, also of Arvada, was injured. Both were wearing seatbelts.

The accident forced the closure of the right westbound lane until about 5:16 p.m. Monday, slowing traffic during the evening commute for area workers.

The State Patrol is continuing to investigate the accident.
