Neal for education board

We’re pleased to support the local candidate, Marcia Neal, in the race for the 3rd Congressional District seat on the State Board of Education, the group that sets broad education policy in the state and oversees local school boards.

Our support for Neal isn’t just parochial, however. Quite simply, Neal more closely mirrors our own views on what needs to be done regarding public education.

Neal, a Republican, is a former Grand Junction High School teacher and was a member of the District 51 School Board for eight years, beginning in 1997. She served on the Colorado Association of School Boards legislative committee.

She believes offering parents and students more choices in their schools — including charter schools, new schedules and calendars, business partnerships and more — is the best way to improve education. She offers specific examples of innovative programs on her Web site, She argues that more money and educational fads aren’t the answer.

Her opponent, Pueblo Democrat Jill Brake, has a different approach. She says on her Web site,, that “Adequate and equitable funding of public education is the most important state priority.”

Brake, currently a member of the Colorado Commission on Higher Education appointed by Gov. Bill Ritter, also said she wants a “whole-child approach that ensures each child is healthy, safe, engaged, supported and challenged.”

Certainly, everyone wants children to be safe and healthy, but undertaking reforms of the sort pushed by Marcia Neal is more likely to result in substantial academic improvements in our schools.

Vote for Marcia Neal for the State Board of Education.
