Neuwirth’s goal lifts Mesa men’s soccer team past Adams
Colorado Mesa University avoided a letdown after its first-ever men’s soccer victory over Fort Lewis College earlier this week.
The Mavericks’ one goal was enough as Colorado Mesa held on to defeat Adams State University 1-0 on Friday in Alamosa.
Phil Neuwirth scored his first goal of the season on a cross from Patrick Laporta 15 minutes into the second half.
The Mavericks (7-3-1, 5-2 RMAC) outshot Adams 11-6. Mesa had four shots on goal. The Grizzlies (1-9, 1-5 RMAC) had three.
Mesa freshman Nestor Escobar took three shots, one on goal. Brandon Burton and Laporta had the other shots on goal for the Mavericks.
Mesa goalkeeper Micah Conrads had three saves. Adams goalie Mike Miller made two saves.
Colorado Mesa freshman Sarah Pope scored two goals to lift the Mavericks to a 2-1 victory over Adams State in Alamosa.
She gave the Mavericks (8-1-2, 5-1-1 RMAC) a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute on an assist from Kelci Crispe. Pope kicked in a rebound off Crispe’s free kick.
Adams State (4-7, 2-5 RMAC) tied the game in the 65th minute.
Mesa scored less than two minutes later, when Brittany Halcomb threaded a pass to Pope on a breakaway.
The Mavericks took 19 shots, 11 on goal.
Mesa goalkeeper Gina Goryoka made two saves.
The Mavericks dominated play in the first half with 11 shots to Adams State’s four. The Grizzlies took 10 shots in the second half to Mesa’s eight.
Adams goalie Christie Stemple made nine saves.
Swimming & Diving
The Air Force Academy dominated the first day of the Intermountain Shootout winning all eight men’s events at El Pomar Natatorium.
Ryan Dunne won the 50-yard butterfly (23.24 seconds) and took second in the 200 freestyle to teammate Kevin Mitchell.
No other men’s results or women’s results were available.
