New Castle Police: Evidence ties dead man to stolen truck

A Westminster man whose body was pulled Thursday from the Colorado River between Silt and Rifle was believed to have stolen a vehicle last week in New Castle and was also wanted on suspicion of violating parole, the New Castle Police Department said in a statement today.

Randall Clark Mayhew, 41, was identified by the Garfield County Coroner’s Office, the statement said.

Police said unspecified evidence recovered from Mayhew’s body allegedly linked him to an auto theft on April 16 in New Castle. Mayhew also had an active arrest warrant, issued by the Colorado Department of Corrections, for suspicion of violating parole, the statement said.

Police last week said a New Castle business reported an unknown man stole a pickup truck and fled toward the New Castle interchange with Interstate 70. The truck crashed and the suspect was last seen traveling along the riverbank before jumping in the river.
