New fire outside De Beque grows to 150 acres

Crews are fighting a new wildfire outside De Beque that has grown to about 150 acres in size and remains at 0 percent containment.

Lightning caused the Third Water Springs Fire, which was reported at 1:15 p.m. Wednesday about 25 miles up Roan Creek Road on Kimball Mountain northwest of De Beque.

The Upper Colorado River Interagency Fire Management Unit said the fire is burning on Bureau of Land Management land, in grass and piñon-juniper vegetation in a steep, mountainous area of Garfield County.

Seven engines, one water tender, five ground crews, airplanes and two helicopters were fighting the fire this morning.

More information on the new fire is available at 970-244-3104.

Lightning also was responsible for the Pine Ridge Fire outside De Beque, which began June 27 and burned almost 14,000 acres before being fully contained.
