No parents or community members show for schools meeting

A dozen staff members, one school board member and a newspaper reporter — and no one else — attended the third of four School District 51 community meetings planned for the 2012-13 school year.

The meeting, scheduled for
6 p.m. Wednesday at Grand Mesa Middle School, was canceled after no parents or concerned citizens showed up 20 minutes into the scheduled event.

The community meetings concept launched this school year as a forum for community members to ask school-related questions of district executives. The first meeting took place in September at the Fruita Community Center and the second took place last month at Grand Junction High School. Both of those meetings attracted about 50 people.

Guesses from Superintendent Steve Schultz and School Board President Greg Mikolai for the lack of a turnout Wednesday ranged from the nice weather or other activities attracting families elsewhere to people still adjusting to daylight savings time.

The next District 51 community meeting, the last one for 2012-13, is scheduled for 6 p.m. April 10 at Palisade High School.
