Omar’s Catering expands to offer breakfast, lunch

Omar’s Catering has won the Daily Sentinel’s Best of the West competition for best catering service nearly every year since Omar Campos opened his Grand Junction business seven years ago.

He figured it was time to give people another avenue to learn what’s on his catering menus.

Omar’s Catering launched an expansion this week, opening its doors for breakfast and lunch. The business at 801 N. First St. will be open daily from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“I want to be able to showcase our catering,” Campos said.

Campos said he had been thinking of offering breakfast and lunch in addition to catering private events for a couple years.

The menu features a simple variety of traditional Mexican and American meals. But diners also can expect to see menu items they likely can’t find elsewhere in the Grand Valley.

A native of Nicaragua, Campos said he occasionally will prepare Central and South American and Caribbean dishes featuring a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables.

He said his general philosophy is to offer simple meals that get people in and out quickly so they can get back to work and don’t weigh them down with a lot of fat. For example, Thursday’s special was a grilled Monte Cristo, a sandwich that’s traditionally deep-fried.

“We want to be health conscious,” he said.

Campos said he also will welcome suggestions for menu items.

Omar’s will close its doors in the afternoon so it can continue to cater private events in the evening.
