Palisade run game clicks in Steamboat

Palisade bounced back from its first loss of the season with a 52-7 drubbing of Steamboat Springs in 3A Western Slope Conference football Friday on a wet, sloppy field in Steamboat Springs.

The fourth-ranked Bulldogs piled up 532 yards of offense, including 427 rushing, led by Dalton Hannigan’s 239 yards rushing on 29 carries. Hannigan also ran for three scores. Meanwhile, the Palisade defense limited the Sailors to 167 yards of offense.

The Bulldogs had five drives of at least 12 plays and ran 74 plays to Steamboat’s 38 for the game.

“It was a smash-mouth game because of the weather,” said Palisade coach John Arledge, whose squad lost 31-3 to top-ranked Rifle last week. “We were going to get back to what we do. We wanted to run the ball.”

Paonia 52, Lake County 0: Will Austin ran for three touchdowns, including two 30-yarders, as the Eagles led 26-0 after one quarter and 46-0 at the half. Paonia improved to 3-0 in the 1A Western Slope Conference and 4-3 overall.

Cedaredge 39, Meeker 13: Carter Wasser rushed for 156 yards on 17 carries and caught two passes for 99 yards, including a screen pass for an 89-yard touchdown. Dante Markley added 139 yards rushing on eight carries, and the threw for 178, including two TDs.

The Bruins finished with 498 total yards and improved to 3-0 in the 1A WSC and 6-1 overall.

Boys soccer

Cory Odom scored the game-winning goal on a direct free kick from midfield as Fruita Monument defeated Durango 2-1 in Southwestern League boys soccer Friday at Canyon View Park.

Durango led 1-0 at the half, but early in the second half Wes Padgett scored the equalizer with an assist from Odom, and Odom scored the winner soon after.

Fruita Monument coach Dan McKee said Odom sent his free kick down the middle of the goal, a few inches below the crossbar and just out of the reach of the goalkeeper. “It was beautiful,” he said.

McKee also lauded two late saves by his goalkeeper, Connor Gaty, who made four stops overall for the Wildcats (7-5-1, 6-1-1 SWL).

Central 9, Montezuma-Cortez 2: Jesus Perez and Jacob Sebesta each scored twice as the Warriors (5-3-2, 3-2-2 SWL) took a 5-0 lead into halftime.

Chris Lopez added two goals early in the second half as Central led 9-0 before allowing two late goals. Matt Miller scored a goal and had three assists for the Warriors, who outshot the Panthers 27-7.

Volleyball

Morgan Thieszen had 16 kills and six block assists to lead Palisade to a 25-16, 25-18, 25-12 victory over Steamboat Springs in Western Slope League volleyball. Shannon Rhodes added 33 assists and Tahverle Hodges had 16 digs for the Bulldogs (10-5, 7-1 WSL).

■ Jordan Eatwell and MacKenzie Schuller had 11 and 10 kills, respectively, as Fruita Monument beat Montezuma-Cortez 25-11, 25-10, 18-25, 25-16 in a Southwestern League match. Jen Morris added 26 assists for the Wildcats and Loryn Chiapuzio had eight kills and a team-high 15 digs.

■ In SWL play, Durango bounced back from a first-game loss to beat Grand Junction 3-1.
