Paonia wins state title

Paonia High School’s football team avenged its only loss of the season today, beating Centauri 32-24 to win the Class 1A state championship.

The Eagles (12-1) last won a state title in 1959, beating Windsor 7-0 for the Class A championship.

Sophomore quarterback Taylor Walters threw a 29-yard touchdown late in the third quarter, and the defense stopped Centauri on fourth down with seven minutes to play to seal the victory.
