Paregien, Sharp enjoying doubles at Taco Bell

Nancy Paregien, right, returns a shot Wednesday during women’s 3.5 doubles competition with partner Lisa Sharp at the Taco Bell Western Slope Open. Paregien and Sharp defeated Stephanie Pomrenke and Carrie Thornton at Elliott Tennis Center.

A few years ago, Nancy Paregien decided to take up tennis.

She joined a team, but she didn’t stop there.

Paregien, 53, asked a co-worker, Lisa Sharp, to join her.

This week, the two Grand Junction women are playing in their fifth Taco Bell Western Slope Open.

They began play in the women’s 3.5 doubles division Wednesday, defeating Stephanie Pomrenke and Carrie Thornton 7-6, 6-4 in the first round.

“Once you get the first match out of the way, it’s much easier (to relax),” Sharp said.

It was Pomrenke and Thornton’s first match in the 3.5 division.

“I’m always nervous at the start of Taco Bell,” Paregien said. “They played very well.”

Many of the 14 teams in the women’s 3.5 doubles division play in U.S. Tennis Leagues together.

“It is a big draw and is very competitive,” Sharp said. “All the teams are equally matched. A lot of the teams have a long-time partnership.”

Paregien and Sharp, 46, developed a friendship working for Mesa County School District 51.

Sharp is the director of purchasing and Paregien is the director of finance and payroll.

That friendship has expanded to the tennis courts.

Paregien and Sharp play in a Grand Junction women’s league, mixed league, a U.S. Tennis League and even take spring break trips to Arizona to play tennis.

“I keep thinking she’ll dump me (for another partner),” Paregien said.

Sharp said that’s not about to happen.

They played in the women’s 3.0 division their first year. The next year, they tried playing in the 3.5 division in addition to 3.0. Since then, they’ve played in the 3.5 division. They reached the consolation finals last year.

Sharp and Paregien are also playing mixed doubles with their husbands this year.
