Penry raises $416K in third quarter

State Sen. Josh Penry, R-Grand Junction, amassed $416,000 in third-quarter funds raised, about 90 percent of the amount posted by the governor he hopes to succeed.

Gov. Bill Ritter, a Democrat, announced earlier this week that he raised $452,000 toward his re-election bid. He has no opposition.

Penry is locked in a battle with his former boss, six-time U.S. Rep. Scott McInnis, also of Grand Junction, for the GOP nomination to face off against Ritter.

Penry sent text messages to his supporters with news of his fundraising on Wednesday, telling them Ritter “has Pres. Obama’s fund-raising list, but we’ve got you.”

His campaign manager, Mike Britt, described Penry’s opponents as “entrenched political veterans” and touted his “strong conservative message” in a statement.

In a news release Wednesday, Penry compared his bid with Ritter’s first-quarter collection in 2006, when Ritter announced his bid for governor. As a statewide newcomer, Ritter raised $165,000, Penry said.

Penry collected contributions averaging $225 from 1,491 donors, 92 percent of whom are from Colorado, he said.

Oct. 15 is the deadline to report on the third-quarter fundraising for state offices.
