PIRATES WIN OVERTIME THRILLER for state Class 2A crown

Glenwood Springs returns to top with title in class 3A

AURORA — The gold football trophy of a state champion is returning to the Western Slope this weekend.

Western Colorado high school football fans had a lot to brag about Saturday after Olathe and Glenwood Springs earned state championships at Legacy Stadium at Cherokee Trail High School in Aurora.

They also emerged from four championship games Saturday as the only undefeated teams in the state’s four upper classifications.

Olathe and its fans were the first to celebrate, as the Pirates won their first football state championship with a thrilling, come-from-behind 22-21 overtime victory over Erie in the Class 2A title game.

In a town long known for its sweet corn, its residents have a new source of pride, and the Olathe players and fans celebrated on the field, hoisting the championship trophy. One of the players who raised the gold football over his head, linebacker Chris Brummitt, said, “It is heavy, but I love it.”

“This is a dream come true,” Olathe quarterback Garhett Jurgens added.

Several hours later, Glenwood Springs shared that championship feeling with a 23-14 triumph against Fort Morgan for the Class 3A state title, the Demons’ first state football championship in 28 years.

Glenwood Springs wide receiver Kevin Screen, who scored two touchdowns Saturday, was nearly speechless aside from offering, “I don’t know what to say,” as he absorbed the thought of winning the state title.

Olathe and Glenwood had large contingents of fans who knew how Screen felt. Few words were necessary Saturday afternoon. Their championship smiles and occasional screams of joy more than sufficed.

Rifle was the most recent Western Slope champion, winning the 3A crown in 2004, according to the Web site of the Colorado High School Activities Association. The Bears defeated Sterling 7-6.
