Dear Editors:

The tragic events in Aurora reflect the pernicious consequences of the National Rifle Association’s (“NRA”) continuing reliance on political intimidation to preclude sensible and constitutional gun control legislation.

The dubious “Fast and Furious” (“FAF”) scandal originated in NRA fund-raising literature, which falsely accused the Obama Administration of promoting the flow of weapons into Mexico—so that increased violence south-of-the-border could be used to justify much-needed gun controls north-of-the border.

As reported in Fortune Magazine, FAF was a low-level operation—started during the Bush Administration—targeting illegal “straw person” gun buyers.  When the ATF intercepted guns and arrested their nominal buyers, the Bush-appointed U.S. Attorney declined to prosecute (citing ambiguous laws), so the guns and the buyers were released, the guns went into Mexico, and some were found where a border patrol agent was slain.

While Bush’s Attorney General (“AG”) knew about the operation, AG Eric Holder did not.  When Holder belatedly learned about FAF, he ordered it stopped.  When the head of the ATF in Phoenix tried to testify before Congress as to the need for less ambiguous gun control laws—particularly in Arizona, Committee Chairman Darrell Issa wouldn’t allow it, but rather insisted on holding Holder in contempt.

On July 17, 2012, right-wing comedian Rush Limbaugh broadcast the conspiracy theory that the villain “Bane” was named – and release of the new Batman movie was timed – by “Hollywood liberals” to underscore tax-dodger Willard M. Romney’s association with “Bain” Capital – even though Batman characters were created decades ago.

Thus, we can now expect the NRA – supported by Limbaugh – to flood its supporters with fund-raising literature implying that the Aurora massacre was orchestrated by the “anti-gun left” to justify more stringent – and obviously much-needed—controls of assault weapons, high capacity magazines, and mail-order ammunition.

Enough is enough.
