Police: Boy may have been alone hours before death

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — Steamboat Springs police say a 3-year-old boy who died last week may have been left alone for nearly 20 hours in a cabin that contained human waste and partially eaten food.

The Steamboat Springs Pilot & Today reported Wednesday (http://tinyurl.com/l5g2we2 ) Meghan McKeon faces a charge of fatal child abuse in the death of her son, Austin Davis.

McKeon’s attorney, Sheryl Uhlmann, didn’t immediately return an after-hours phone message.

In an arrest warrant affidavit, police say they believe the child was left alone while McKeon went to work and then spent the night at her boyfriend’s house.

The cause of death hasn’t been determined.

McKeon originally faced child abuse and reckless endangerment charges. Prosecutors dropped those counts Wednesday and filed the more serious charge of child abuse resulting in death.
