Police: CU student beats raccoon to death for hide

BOULDER — Police have arrested a 19-year-old University of Colorado student accused of beating a raccoon to death with a baseball bat so he could take the animal’s hide.

Authorities were called to a home just east of the CU campus Wednesday evening on reports that someone was killing raccoons. Officers say they found a baseball bat covered in blood on the front porch of the house, along with a raccoon skin covered in salt.

The Daily Camera reports Jace Robert Griffiths, who lives at the home, was arrested on suspicion of aggravated animal cruelty.

Griffiths said in a statement to police the raccoon approached him and a friend, and “we could have walked away, but I decided to go up and kill it so that I could take its hide.”
