Police say friendly fire may have killed Lakewood officer

LAKEWOOD — Lakewood police say an officer killed while investigating reports of gunfire may have been killed by another officer.

Lakewood police spokesman Steve Davis said the officer was killed when police responded to a report early Friday of shots being fired in a residential area. Police located a home where the shots were believed to have been fired and arrested three people.

Davis says the officer was shot after three people had already been arrested. He said it is not clear who shot the policeman and investigators are looking at other possibilities.

Davis said there was a lot of confusion when officers responded to the home, which was located near the border with the town of Edgewater.
