Police: Teen accidentally fatally shot by friend

COTTONWOOD HEIGHTS — Police say a 17-year-old boy has died after he was accidentally shot in the head by another teenager at a Cottonwood Heights home.

Cottonwood Heights police Lt. Mark Askerlund says the boys were with three other teenagers in the basement of the home near 6800 South and Pine Rock Drive on Wednesday night.

Askerlund says the teenagers were passing around a handgun and fired it several times believing it was empty. One round struck the 17-year-old boy, who died on scene.

Askerlund says several adults were upstairs in the home when the shooting took place.

Police arrested the 16-year-old who fired the gun on suspicion of negligent homicide and another 16-year-old suspected of receiving stolen property.

Officials have not released any identities but say the teenagers attended Brighton High School.
