Police: woman says she escaped kidnapper in Utah

SALT LAKE CITY — Police are questioning a man after a woman told them she was abducted from a New York City street, beaten and forced into prostitution before she escaped in downtown Salt Lake City.

Salt Lake City police Detective Robin Heiden says police found the 23-year-old woman in a downtown parking lot after she called 911 about 9:30 p.m. Sunday.

Police say the woman told them she was kidnapped two or three weeks ago and was beaten so badly she lost consciousness. She says she tried unsuccessfully to escape in Denver from a man who was driving a black Mercedes Benz.

The woman is now in the hospital.

Police say it is too early to call the man they have in custody a suspect.
