Police: Infant’s death suspicious

Montrose Police Chief Tom Chinn said the death of a 14-month-old girl Saturday is considered suspicious.

The girl, Hailey L. Rocha, was pronounced dead at the emergency room of Montrose Memorial Hospital on Saturday night. Cause and manner of death have yet to be determined, pending an autopsy, the Montrose County Coroner’s Office said.

Officers were assisting an ambulance crew after receiving a 911 phone call from a person at a restaurant on the south side of Montrose, Chinn said.

The caller said someone at the restaurant was administering CPR to the infant, who was unresponsive and not breathing.

Chinn did not specify the restaurant, but said the baby’s mother is employed there.

A man had brought the girl to the restaurant from a home in Montrose, Chinn said. Chinn said he didn’t know the man’s relationship to the infant or her mother.

The death remains under investigation.
