Police: Mother abducted her own child

The mother of an 8-month-old girl faces several possible charges after she allegedly took her child from her grandmother, ran away and hid in a nearby apartment, Grand Junction police said Thursday night.

Monique Maldonado, 25, was arrested on suspicion of child abuse, first-degree trespassing and obstructing a peace officer, after an incident that started around 4:45 p.m. at a gas station at 26 Road and Belford Avenue, according to police spokeswoman Kate Porras.

Maldonado and Abelino Sanchez, 20, allegedly walked up to Maldonado’s mother at the gas station, pulled the infant out of her car seat and ran roughly a block away to Garden Village Apartments, 2601 Belford Ave.

The grandmother called 911 and told police where the pair had fled.

Maldonado and Sanchez allegedly tried to enter an apartment unit, but they were chased off by the occupants, Porras said.

They later found the correct apartment, where a friend lives.

Maldonado eventually surrendered to police, while Sanchez was arrested trying to climb out of a back window after officers had surrounded the building, Porras said.

Maldonado is the biological mother of the infant, but the child had recently been staying with her grandmother, according to Porras.

Porras said because the custody status of the child wasn’t clear Thursday night, Maldonado and Sanchez weren’t expected to be booked on suspicion of kidnapping.

Sanchez, who had five outstanding arrest warrants, was expected to be booked on suspicion of charges identical to Maldonado’s, Porras said.

Maldonado is serving parole, Porras said.

The infant wasn’t injured during the incident.
