Policing the pot industry

The Colorado Wellness Association, the state’s newest trade association, has a soothing name. Who objects to wellness?

Guess they didn’t want to call it The Doobie Dispensers Association.

Flippancy aside, the medical marijuana business in Colorado is booming, with new stores rapidly springing up in many cities, including Grand Junction. And questions about the rules under which these medical marijuana dispensaries operate have been cropping up almost as quickly.

Hence the need for a trade association, which the founders said Wednesday would work to formulate new regulations, develop quality-control guidelines and perhaps even establish a marijuana commodities market.

At least the first two of those are desperately needed, which is why we continue to believe the state Legislature should move quickly next year to develop laws and regulations governing this nascent but quickly expanding industry.
