Prom fashions pop with color

Ivana Suarez, a junior at Central High School, hits the runway during Saturday afternoon’s Prom Fashion Show Extravaganza at Mesa Mall in Grand Junction. About 20 students modeled during three showings

The runway at Saturday’s Prom Fashion Show Extravaganza at Mesa Mall featured vibrant colors, strapless and spaghetti-strap gowns and dapper tuxedos.

Local models sported attire from Deb Shops, Men’s Wearhouse and Hot Topic during the third annual fashion show. Crowd members got an eyeful of ideas for prom season and could enter to win raffle prizes from Absolute Prestige Limousine Service, Cost Cutters, Hot Topic, Men’s Wearhouse and The Galleria Art of Photography and Salon.

Sharay Roth, manager of Deb Shops at the mall and organizer of the fashion show, said she expects bright-colored dresses with fitted bodices and billowing skirts to be some of her best-sellers this year. Prices range from $5 on clearance up to the high $100s in the store.

“We have a huge amount of options” for teens’ wallets, Roth said.

Mikayla Duffy, Mesa Mall’s teen lifestylist™ and emcee of the fashion show, said most of her friends are looking for dresses no more expensive than $200.

“Definitely with the economy they’re trying to hold back,” she said.

No matter the price, Duffy predicted the most popular dresses this spring will be in bright shades of orange, yellow or green, ankle-length, and with beading detail.
