Pueblo commissioner to vie for 3rd CD

Pueblo County Commissioner and former state Rep. Liane “Buffie” McFadyen has tossed her name into the ring this afternoon to be the Democratic Party’s nominee for the Third Congressional District.

If the 45-year-old Democrat wins that nomination, she likely would run against incumbent U.S. Rep. Scott Tipton, a Cortez Republican.

McFadyen’s entry into the race answers a long-standing question among Democrats in the expansive district: who is their party putting up in the race? All other members of Colorado’s congressional delegation have long had challengers come out against them.

McFadyen said she decided to run for the seat following last year’s government shutdown, saying she hopes to bring to Congress the same reach-across-the-aisle attitude she’s maintained as a county commissioner and member of the Colorado House, a seat she held for eight years before being term-limited from office.
