Region under flash flood watch

A saturated western Colorado and eastern Utah are under a flash flood watch until tonight, as forecasters are calling for widespread showers and thunderstorms today that could lead to runoff and flooding.

The watch is in effect for the eastern Utah counties that border Colorado and about the western third of Colorado until 9 p.m.

“Recent burn scars, steep terrain and normally dry washes will all need to be monitored closely as the strong storms pass through on Monday,” the National Weather Service in Grand Junction wrote on its website. “Mudslides, debris flows in burn scar areas and sudden increases in water flows may occur. Be prepared to seek higher ground at a moment’s notice.”

There’s a 40 percent chance of rain this afternoon and this evening for Grand Junction. The city’s high is expected to reach 82 degrees today before it warms up and dries out for most of the rest of the week.
