UPDATE: Police seek witnesses in fatal crash near Mesa Mall
A man on a motorcycle was struck and killed this morning by a pickup truck on the east side of Mesa Mall.
The man, who hasn’t been identified by authorities, was leaving the mall parking lot, pulling onto 24 1/2 Road, around 11 a.m. when he was struck, Grand Junction police said in a news release. The rider was pronounced dead at the scene.
A witness to the accident, who also offered a written statement to Grand Junction Police Department officers, was driving north on 24 1/2 Road and observed a southbound Chevy pickup suddenly swerve, running up onto the median near the exit to Mesa Mall. The witness stopped, ran back to the scene where a man on a motorcycle was on the ground in southbound traffic with no pulse.
Police spokeswoman Kate Porras said the pickup driver was taken to St. Mary’s Hospital for a blood draw, a test to check for intoxication which is standard procedure in fatal accident investigations. The driver had no obvious signs of intoxication, Porras said.
Officers don’t believe the motorcyclist was wearing a helmet..
Officers believe two other motorcyclists may have been riding behind the man who was killed. Authorities are still trying to find those riders, as well as the driver of a brown sedan who had pulled out of the parking lot of nearby Carmike Cinemas, 590 24 1/2 Road, around the time of the accident, the release said.
A stretch of 24 1/2 Road, from Patterson to Highway 6&50, was closed just under three hours before opening again around 1:30 p.m.
