UPDATE: Highway 65 could be closed for 24 hours

A multi-mile stretch of Colorado Highway 65 in Plateau Canyon could be closed until Friday afternoon after rocks — some the size of a small house — tumbled onto the highway, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.

CDOT posted on its Twitter feed around 5:15 p.m. that the highway in the canyon could be closed for 24 hours. The rockslide was reported around 3:15 p.m. at mile marker 58, about three miles from the Interstate 70 exit. Officials have closed the windy highway through the canyon and the exit from I-70.

The slide happened further west of the intersection with the De Beque Cutoff Road, or 45 1/2 Road, so that road will be an available detour for folks on Grand Mesa trying to get back to the Grand Valley. That detour will be available tomorrow for people trying to get up to the mesa from the interstate.

Check back as more details become available and read the full story in the Friday edition of the Daily Sentinel.
