Rifle gets top seed in 3A

Montrose High School quarterback Drew Casebier (7) looks for a receiver with Ira Wooten (44) and Brennan Woodruff (24) as blockers in the first quarter against Central High School at Montrose on Friday night, Nov. 2. Montrose will host Mesa Ridge in the Class 4A playoffs.

Rifle and Montrose will host first-round playoff games based on the seeds they received Sunday when the Colorado High School Activities Association released its state football playoff pairings.

Most of the days and times for games will be announced by the schools today.

In 3A, Rifle (10-0) received the No. 1 seed and will host No. 16 Erie (7-3).

In Class 4A, Montrose (7-3) is the No. 7 seed and will host No. 10 Mesa Ridge (7-3).

No. 9 Palisade (8-2) will travel to No. 8 Roosevelt (6-4), and the winner will play the Rifle-Erie winner in the second round.

Rifle defeated Palisade 31-3 during the regular season.

Palisade has won two straight games since its 26-21 loss to Delta.

Montrose is riding a winning streak of four games, all of which came over its Southwestern Conference opponents en route to the conference title.

The Indians were ninth in the wildcard points standings before their 48-0 win Friday against Central.

“So we’re happy to be playing at home,” Montrose coach Todd Casebier said. “My understanding is that the reason we were able to move up is because of the schedule we played and the (CHSAA football) committee looks less at the record and more at who we played and how we played them.”

Montrose is hoping running back Angelo Youngren, who has 1,498 yards and 18 touchdowns, will return from a high ankle sprain. He did not play in the Indians win over Central.

“I think he’s getting better, and he’s got another week left,” Casebier said, “but who knows whether he’ll be able to play.”

Delta (7-3) qualified with the No. 13 seed and will open the playoffs at No. 3 The Classical Academy (9-1), which is coming off a 14-3 loss to Pueblo Central.

Palisade, Rifle and Delta are on the same side of the bracket.

“That’s a little baffling to me,” Delta head coach Ben Johnson said. “You’d think Rifle would be the one sent to the other side.”

In Class 1A quarterfinal games, No. 3 Cedaredge will play No. 6 Monte Vista and No. 10 Hotchkiss will take on No. 2 Limon.

Sites, dates and times are to be announced.

With wins, Cedaredge and Hotchkiss would meet in the semifinals.

Cedaredge won at Hotchkiss 21-20 during in the regular season.
