Rockies select Gray with third pick of draft

The Colorado Rockies have selected Jonathan Gray with the third pick of the Major League Baseball Draft.

Gray, a right-handed pitcher out of the University of Oklahoma, has reached 100 mph with his fastball this season. He’s 6-foot-4, 245 pounds and was drafted in the 10th round in 2011 by the New York Yankees.

In the second round, the Rockies selected third baseman Ryan McMahon from Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana, Calif. McMahon hit .353 with 11 doubles, four home runs, 23 RBI and scored 16 runs in 30 games his senior year of high school. The 6-3, 200-pound 18-year-old also played quarterback in high school.

In the Competitive Balance B round, the Rockies selected Alex Balog, a 6-6 right-handed pitcher from the University of San Francisco, the 70th pick overall.

The draft continues today with Rounds 3-10, starting at 10:30 a.m.
