Rockies start second day of draft with P, OF

The Colorado Rockies today selected Sam Moll, a left-handed pitcher, in the third round of the Major League draft.

Moll, only 5-foot-10, 185 pounds, has good arm strength, according to scouting reports, reaching the mid-90s with his fastball, and had a solid curve. A starter at the University of Memphis, he could end up as a reliever.

Jordan Patterson was taken in the fourth round. The 6-foot-4, 205-pound junior at the University of South Alabama is listed as a right fielder, but scouting reports say he can play multiple positions, including first base, where he played much of this season. The Sun Belt Conference player of the year led the Jaguars with a .352 batting average, playing all 63 games. He drove in 49 runs and scored 69.

Blake Shouse, a right-handed pitcher from Middle Georgia College, was the Rockies’ fifth-round selection. He started at third base for Middle Georgia and then came in to close games. He’s committed to the University of Georgia.

Dom Nunez, a high school prospect, was selected in the sixth round. He’s listed as a third baseman, but moved to catcher this spring at Elk Grove (Calif.) High School. He played for the U.S. National Team the past two years as a shortstop.

In the seventh round, the Rockies took Konner Wade, a right-handed pitcher from the University of Arizona. the 6-3, 190-pounder throws in the high 80s with a lot of sink on his fastball that induces ground balls, according to scouting reports.

Terry McClure, a center fielder from Riverwood International Charter School in Georgia, was the Rockies’ eighth-round pick. He’s committed to Georgia Tech. The 6-2, 190-pounder has good speed on the bases and covers a lot of ground in the outfield.

In the ninth round, the 259th pick overall, the Rockies took Patrick Valaika, a shortstop from UCLA who could end up being a second baseman.

The second day of the draft wrapped up for the Rockies with the 10th-round selection of outfielder Mike Tauchman out of Bradley University. The second-team Louisville Slugger All-American hit .425 with 41 RBI this season.
