Romney lands in state

GOLDEN — Mitt Romney comes to Colorado in his first stateside appearance after an overseas trip plagued by controversy.

The Republican presidential candidate will speak to supporters in Golden at 11:15 am Thursday, then meet with Republican governors in Basalt. Romney is nursing wounds from a trip in which he was mocked in England for questioning preparations for the summer Olympics, then criticized for saying culture explains the economic gap between Israel and the Palestinian Territories.

It’s also been two weeks since a gunman killed 12 people and wounded 58 at a screening of the new Batman movie in Aurora. The campaigns of Romney and President Barack Obama took down political ads in the days after the July 20 attack, but both are back on the air this week.
