Rupe, Zuniga honored by WSL softball coaches
Palisade’s Katie Rupe was selected the Class 4A Western Slope League Player of the Year on Thursday, and Bulldogs coach Nicole Zuniga was the league’s Coach of the Year.
In leading Palisade (13-9, 6-0 WSL) to a regional tournament appearance, Rupe, a third baseman and pitcher, batted .371 and went 4-1 with a 5.88 ERA. She also had an .870 fielding percentage.
“When we had that (all-league) meeting the coaches just loved her leadership,” Zuniga said of Rupe. “She was always talking on the field, talking about what happened on that play and what should happen on the next play, and she was a magnet at third base.”
The Bulldogs had five first-team players (Sierra Clark, Danica DeLahoz, Angela Gordon, Jenna Lucas and Rupe.)
“It definitely shocks me that I was Coach of the Year,” said Zuniga, in her second year as coach. “A lot of coaches have been coaching a long time and they always have had solid teams in the league.”
