Salazar brings conservation campaign to Utah

SALT LAKE CITY — Interior Secretary Ken Salazar says a compromise reached in a Utah natural-gas drilling project is an example of how to achieve balanced use of public lands.

Salazar was in Salt Lake City today to promote President Obama’s America’s Great Outdoors initiative.

He spoke to thousands and toured the aisles of the Outdoor Retailer trade show. Salazar then held a “listening session” for ideas on conserving public lands and encouraging young people to get outdoors.

At almost every stop, Salazar praised a Denver-based energy company’s compromise with wilderness groups to drill under wild areas — instead of on top of them — near the Green River’s Desolation Canyon.

Bill Barrett Corp. received federal approval last week to drill 626 wells.
