Salt Lake CC has a shot at trip to JUCO

Second-ranked Salt Lake Community College won the Region 18 championship Saturday, 6-5 over Western Nevada, and will host the Western District tournament this weekend.

The Bruins were down 5-2 heading into the bottom of the ninth but scored four runs, including Kennedy Kinkade’s two-run double to score the winning run.

Salt Lake, Western Nevada and Central Arizona, which won the Region 1 title, play for the Western District title Thursday through Saturday.

Lamar plays Northwestern Community College today in the Region 9 championship to get to the district tournament.

The Western District champion qualifies for the Alpine Bank Junior College World Series from May 26-June 2 at Suplizio Field.

Polk State (Fla.) College won the Gulf District title.

Here’s a look at how the other districts are shaping up:

South Central: Connors State (Okla.) College plays either Eastern State or Seminole State in Jenks, Okla., today for the Region 2 title.

Jefferson (Mo.) College defeated Crowder College 8-6 for the Region 16 championship, and Meridian (Miss.) Community College trailed Delgado (La.) College 11-0 in the fifth inning of the championship game in Region 23 when rain postponed play. Jefferson hosts the district May 18-20.

Northern: The Region 4 tourney is at South Suburban (Ill.), with that winner hosting the district tourney May 18-20. Top-ranked Iowa Western is in the Region 11 championship game today after defeating Indian Hills 9-4. Indian Hills plays Marshalltown this morning to get to the title game. In Region 24, John A. Logan (Ill.) College plays Wabash Valley in today’s title game.

East Central: Walters State (Tenn.) won Region 7 and plays at the Georgia state champion May 18-21. The Region 17 tournament in Georgia was postponed by rain Saturday. The championship game is Monday.

Eastern: Spartanburg (S.C.) Methodist won Region 10, with Potomac State (W.Va.) playing undefeated Harford (Md.) Community College in the Region 20 finals today. The winner plays at Spartanburg on May 18-20.

Southwest: New Mexico Junior College, Cisco College, Grayson College and Howard College all won first-round games in Lubbock, Texas. The championship game is Tuesday.

Central: Three teams remain in Wichita, Kan., with Neosho and Cowley playing this afternoon. The loser of that game faces Coffeyville in an elimination game. The championship game is Monday.

Southern: Saturday’s first round in Mt. Pleasant, Texas, was rained out, with defending national champion Navarro College playing Alvin in the first game today. Blinn plays Texarkana, San Jacinto-North faces Paris and Northeast Texas plays Galveston.

Southeastern: Wallace State-Dothan plays Chattahoochee Valley and Alabama Southern faces Central Alabama today in the second round, with Faulkner State and L.B. Wallace also winning first-round games. The tournament, in Ozark, Ala., runs through Thursday.
