Schnetzler leads Mavericks to win

Colorado Mesa University kept control of the ball off a corner kick for three shots Sunday, and the third one paid off in the Mavericks’ 3-1 victory over Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas.

Sarah Schnetzler turned away three shots and the defense blocked another for the Mavericks (1-0-1), who got first-half goals from Renae McFadden and Kaitlynn Holt to build a 2-1 halftime lead.

Daniela Salinas scored for the Mavericks in the 63rd minute to regain a two-goal advantage.

Midwestern State came out firing, with three shots in the first seven minutes. Schnetzler saved the first, only 2:28 into the match, and the defense blocked the next two.

The Mavericks earned a corner kick in the 11th minute and generated three shots within a 30-second period to seize momentum of the game. Leilani Wiernicki’s first attempt off the cross was blocked, but the ball came right back to her.

She immediately shot again, hitting the crossbar, but McFadden was there for the carom and beat Midwestern State goalie Mallory Whitworth.

Less than seen minutes later, Holt scored her first goal of the season from 30 yards out for a 2-0 CMU lead.

Maxey scored off a cross from the right wing at the 32:41 mark of the first half.

Salinas, who came on for Holt six minutes into the second half, scored her first goal after a foul on Midwestern gave the Mavericks possession.

Colorado Mesa was out-shot by Midwestern State 15-12, but made the most of its five shots on goal.

The Mavericks play Angelo State University on Friday afternoon in Durango, then face first-year program Western State Colorado University on Sunday in Gunnison.
