Secretary of state dodges I-70 driver in wrong lane

Colorado Secretary of State Scott Gessler’s road trip Thursday to Grand Junction was nearly derailed by a wrong-way driver on Interstate 70.

Gessler, who arrived in Grand Junction at 2:20 p.m., told The Daily Sentinel he was driving west on I-70 in Garfield County, between Rifle and Glenwood Springs, when he dodged an oncoming vehicle in the same lane.

“I had to swing into the right lane,” Gessler said, describing the wrong-way car as blue with an orange stripe, resembling a 1970s Charger.

Gessler said he called 911, and the dispatcher seemed to be already aware that a car was speeding against traffic in the vicinity of mile markers 92 or 93. The suspected driver, a man behind the wheel of a green Chrysler station wagon, was stopped around mile post 106, but at that point he was driving in the correct lane, Colorado State Patrol spokeswoman Heather Cobler said.

The man, whose name wasn’t immediately available, was cited and released, Cobler said. Three troopers were dispatched after the call around 1:15 p.m., Cobler said.
