Seven Mavs place in UNC Open

Mesa State placed seven wrestlers in the top six Sunday in the Old Chicago Northern Colorado Open in Greeley.

“It was a good tournament,” Mesa State coach Chuck Pipher said. “The young guys wrestled well. We’ve never had seven place.”

Freshman Chris Rubalcaba led the way, winning the 133-pound title. Freshmen Jon Gappmaier and Tyler Juby placed second in the 141 and 149 pound classes, respectively.

Freshman Trevor Donarski (141) and junior Shane Miller (197) each took fifth. Freshman Chasen Tolbert (125) and sophomore Justin Grosse (174) placed sixth.

Team points are not kept in open tournaments.

The Mavericks are off this week, but return to the mat Dec. 5 at the Fort Hays State Open.
