Sheriff: Autopsy shows shooting suspect died of hypothermia

CORTEZ — Authorities say an autopsy shows an attempted murder suspect died shortly after fleeing the scene of a shooting in Cortez.

The Cortez Journal reports Charles Oliver Evans was a suspect in the non-fatal shooting of Ocean Rodd following an altercation March 27.

Evans’ family reported him missing April 5. A passerby discovered Evans’ remains May 2 in a private field south of Denny Lake.

Montezuma County Sheriff Steve Nowlin says Wednesday an autopsy showed Evans died of hypothermia shortly after fleeing the scene in March.

Nowlin says Evans’ death has been ruled an accident, and the shooting case is closed.
