Sheriff’s Office collecting cash for burglarized European traveling couple

Imagine if your most prominent memory of Western Colorado was getting burglarized?

That may be the case for two European travelers. The duo were hiking Rattlesnake Arches on Wednesday when someone busted out the window of their rental car that was parked at the trailhead in Fruita and stole all their camera equipment, clothing and personal effects.

A donation box is available at the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office until about 2:30 p.m. today while authorities scramble to help out before the couple is on their way. They had been planning to head to Moab today, but are in Grand Junction.

They have 10 more days in the U.S. to finish out their vacation, according to Heather Benjamin, spokeswoman for the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office.

The couple had been camping at Colorado National Monument and had left their tents and equipment in place, so they are not missing any camping equipment, Benjamin said.

Folks have been donating items and cash this morning, as word of the burglary is spreading, she said.

The woman is from France, and the man is from Germany. They each are about 54 years old.
