Small-school Paonia leading mighty Warrior Classic
Paonia High School advanced five wrestlers to the Warrior Classic finals tonight at Central High School.
The Eagles lead the team race 181.5 points. Rocky Mountain out of Fort Collins is second with 145 points. Arvada West is third with 110.5 and Fruita Monument is tied with Pueblo South for fourth with 106.
The championship finals will begin at 6 p.m. at Central High School.
Paonia freshman Bo Pipher continues his run, pinning Center’s returning state placer Angel Chavez in the 120-pound semifinals. Pipher will wrestle 3A state runner-up Trenton Piatt of Olathe in the final.
Paonia’s Josh Altman (113 pounds), Tyler Kendall (182), Morgan Rieder (195) and Tony Darling (285) advanced to the finals.
Grand Junction’s Jacob Trujillo pinned Palisade’s Trevor Garcia in the 145-pound semifinals. Trujillo will wrestle Danny Clark of Rocky Mountain in the final.
Palisade’s Dalton Hannigan advanced to his first Warrior Classic final with a 7-6 victory over Fernando Carrasco of Thunderbird (Ariz.) Hannigan will wrestle defending Warrior Classic champion Payton Tawater of Arvada West in the 126-pound final.
Fruita Monument’s Jacob Seely defeated Arvada West’s Tony Silva-Bussey 5-3 in the 170-pound semifinals. Seely will wrestle Caleb Cuneio of Air Academy.
Montrose’s Marcus Velasquez will wrestle for the 160-pound title against Nucla’s Tray Sickels. Velasquez defeated Roosevelt’s Spencer Urban 4-2 in the semifinals.
