Special teams, turnovers prove costly in CMU opener
Humboldt State returned a punt and an interception for touchdowns at critical moments, costing the Colorado Mesa University football team a chance for a victory in coach Russ Martin’s debut.
The No. 21 Lumberjacks took an early lead and rolled to a 38-19 victory over Colorado Mesa (0-1) at the Redwood Bowl in Arcata, Calif.
Humboldt State (1-0) had a 52-yard punt return for a touchdown in the second quarter for a 21-7 lead then returned an interception for a score in the fourth quarter for a 38-13 lead.
Deke Cisco completed 10 of 21 passes for 96 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Austen Fales completed 1 of 4 for 7 yards and one interception.
Jake Cimolino had 17 rushes for 91 yards and one touchdown.
