Mountain biking

Bike Park construction to begin soon

The Colorado Plateau Mountain Bike Trail Association is hosting a take a kid mountain biking day from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at the future home of the Lunch Loop Bike Park.

The park will be located at the Lunch Loop trail head on Monument Road, East of Colorado National Monument.

Construction begins of the park Monday morning. The project is being directed by Greg Mazu, owner of Singletrack Trails. James Flatten is assisting in the design.

Volunteers are welcome to help build the park’s fourth element, alternate skills lines, from 9 a.m. to noon Oct. 2 and Oct. 9. No experience is necessary.

Construction is expected to be completed Oct. 15 and the park expected to open Oct. 16 following a ribbon-cutting ceremony. REI, Inc. donated $10,000 to build the park.

College Tennis

Kearney easily tops young Mavs

Andres Hernandez and Alex Barrios won their singles matches Thursday, but Mesa State’s young men’s tennis team lost 7-2 to the University of Nebraska-Kearney.

Hernandez won his No. 3 singles match in three sets over Revel Yehezhia 7-6 (8-6), 4-6, 10-4, and Barrios claimed a 7-5, 6-1 win over Rodrigo Duncan at No. 4 singles.

The Mavericks play in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Central Regional tournament today through Sunday in Kearney.

Prep Softball

Fruita sweeps DH in Durango

Fruita Monument (14-2, 6-1 Southwestern League) notched two lopsided victories in Durango, winning 10-0 and 13-1.

Mallory Paulson pitched the first game for the Wildcats and finished with 10 strikeouts. Paulson also went 2 for 3 with two doubles.

In the second game, the Wildcats got a combined nine RBI from Ashleigh Wissel and Paulson. Fruita Monument pitcher Erika Chirdon struck out seven.
