Mavs selected to All-Colorado team

Colorado Mesa senior All-American Connor Wright and junior Trent deBraga were selected to the National Football Foundation Colorado Chapter All-Colorado team recently.

Wright made the first-team defense and deBraga made the second-team special teams.

Wright made the 2011 Daktronics All-America first team, Super Region 3 first team and All-RMAC team with 106 total tackles, 11 sacks and 20.5 tackles for a loss. He set two RMAC and Mesa records for most sacks in a game (six) and most tackles for loss yardage (7.5 for 39 yards) in a victory over Dixie State.

DeBraga led the RMAC with 24 kick returns for 698 yards (29.1 per return). He was named a Capital One Academic All-American with a 4.0 GPA and led the team with 42 solo tackles and three interceptions for 99 yards.

The All-Colorado team was voted on by the NFFCC board and the sports information directors from the 10 Colorado institutions including Division I and Division II schools. RMAC champion CSU-Pueblo led all schools with 12 selections. The University of Colorado had 10 players recognized.

College Swimming

Martin, Lera are divers of week

Colorado Mesa divers Brock Martin and Brooke Lera were selected the RMAC men’s and women’s divers of the week for their performances in the UNLV Winter Invitational last week.

Martin, a sophomore All-American, received the award for the fourth time this season. He won the 1-meter event (227.20 points) and placed second in the 3-meter event (262.75). Martin has won nine consecutive diving titles and nine of 11 events entered this season.

Lera, a freshman, placed 10th in the 1-meter (206.55) and 3-meter (227.25). She was the top Division II diver in each event.

The CMU men’s swimming and diving team is ranked No. 22 in the latest Collegiate Swimming Coaches Association of America poll, released last week.

The Mavericks return to action Jan. 7 at the Citrus Classic in Mesa, Ariz.

College Soccer

Ali on scholastic All-America team

Colorado Mesa defender Bashiru Ali made the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Scholastic All-America third team.

The senior from Ghana has a 3.87 GPA in business administration.

It is Ali’s fourth academic award this year. He made the NSCAA All-Region second team, the RMAC All-Academic team and the Capital One Academic All-District team.
