Standoff ends with arrest of robbery suspect
A nearly six-hour standoff at a Horizon Drive motel ended peacefully just before midnight Thursday night with the arrest of an armed robbery suspect, according to Grand Junction police.
Skylar Kesterson, 23, was arrested just after 11:30 p.m. at the Mesa Inn, 704 Horizon Drive, after Grand Junction Police Department SWAT team officers deployed tear gas into his motel room.
The incident began around 5:45 p.m. when detectives learned Kesterson, who was suspected of robbing Check Into Cash, 2546 Rimrock Ave., No. 500, in September 2012, was inside a first-room floor at the Mesa Inn. Officers responded in an attempt to get Kesterson to come out on his own, police spokeswoman Kate Porras said.
During the negotiations, officers observed Kesterson with a gun. They evacuated the motel rooms surrounding the one occupied by Kesterson and told citizens in nearby homes, motels and businesses to remain inside and lock their doors. A portion of Horizon Drive also was closed, Porras said.
SWAT team officers were eventually called out and encouraged Kesterson to come out peacefully. They deployed tear gas after Kesterson refused to comply with their commands. He emerged from the room minutes later, Porras said.
Kesterson was arrested on multiple felony warrants, including one for armed robbery and two for failure to comply on felony menacing charges.
