State asked to pay for recall elections

PUEBLO — Two southern Colorado lawmakers are asking the state to pay the cost of last year’s recall elections in Pueblo and El Paso counties.

State Sen. George Rivera, a Republican from Pueblo, and state Sen. Bernie Herpin, a Republican from Colorado Springs, have told Secretary of State Scott Gessler they believe the state is required to cover the $270,000 it cost Pueblo County and the $150,000 it cost El Paso County to conduct the special elections last year.

Those recall races ousted Democratic state Sens. Angela Giron, of Pueblo, and John Morse, of Colorado Springs over their votes on gun issues. Rivera and Herpin were elected to replace them.

According to the Pueblo Chieftain, Gessler isn’t opposed to reimbursing the counties if the Legislature provides the funds to do it.
