State refunds available for overpaid fees

Businesses that have overpaid the Colorado Secretary of State’s Office but have not yet claimed their money now need to turn to the Colorado Treasurer’s Office.

Secretary of State Scott Gessler is to turn over about $485,000 in overpayments to Colorado Treasurer Walker Stapleton’s unclaimed property fund program. Most of that money is from business filings, but some is from transactions from bingo, raffles, notaries and elections.

Gessler’s office said numerous businesses were notified that they had overpaid state filings fees, but businesses that paid before June 2009 have not yet claimed refunds.

“This money belongs to businesses and people across Colorado, and we want to be sure it gets returned to them,” Gessler said. “While my office has already taken steps to prevent these overpayments in the future, the unclaimed property division acts as an efficient clearinghouse for residents to find overpayments owed to them.”

Coloradans can check to see whether they have unclaimed property by logging onto or calling 800-825-2111.

The program has about $200 million in unclaimed cash and property belonging to more than two million people.
